Capital Strategy

Blackpath advises on the capital decisions that shape what an organisation builds, when it commits, and how it carries risk across decades.

These decisions are made inside study phases, inside investment cases, inside assumptions rarely tested by the people who must live with what follows. When they fail, they fail slowly. Across budgets. Across timelines. Across the communities on whose Country they are built.

We have shaped, delivered, and reviewed capital decisions across Australian resources exceeding A$13 billion in committed capital. We bring the same work to the organisations making such decisions and to the Traditional Owner groups whose Country they are built on.

How we help

Investment shaping

We work with organisations to resolve heritage, community, and regulatory exposure inside the investment case, before capital is committed, not after.

Capital evaluation

We pressure-test investment cases for executive teams and investment committees. When an independent view is needed, we provide it.

Portfolio sequencing

We assess whether the framework connecting capital allocation, sequencing, and governance across a portfolio actually exists. In most cases, it does not.

Due diligence

We conduct independent review of investment proposals, testing the assumptions that matter most before capital is committed.

Closure planning

We advise from development through operation to closure. Closure brings its own governance and liability demands, and most organisations are not ready for them.

Recent work

Iron Ore Portfolio Architecture, A$11B+

A mining company's multi-billion-dollar portfolio was operating without a unifying framework connecting scheduling, assurance, and capital allocation. We designed an integrated planning and governance structure that resolved sequencing conflicts across major developments, produced an estimated A$400 million in capital efficiency, and removed A$4 million in annual operating cost.

Investment Acceleration, A$3B+

A major resource development was carrying fundamental gaps that would have extended the study timeline by more than 18 months. We conducted independent due diligence, identified the constraints, and redesigned the study approach. Study costs were reduced by approximately A$15 million and the NPV impact of accelerated first production exceeded A$200 million.

Capital Decision Framework, A$2.1B

A major investment decision carried material heritage and community risk that was not visible in the financial model. We designed a framework that integrated commercial, heritage, and Indigenous considerations and presented it across the executive team. The development was approved and the company adopted the framework as its global standard, applying it to more than A$8 billion in subsequent decisions.
